Do I need a car if I am staying in El Tunco?
Not to move around the town itself, which is small. You need one to reach the other breaks — El Zonte, El Sunzal, Mizata — and to go inland to the volcanoes on a flat day.

Is it safe to leave the car parked at the beach?
Use attended parking, which the main beaches have, and leave nothing visible inside. That is the standard practice locally and works well.
Is a 4x4 needed on the coast?
No. The Litoral highway and the beach accesses are paved. A normal car handles the coast comfortably; you only want clearance for volcano and highland roads.
